Leadership Team Message
Merciful God,
you called us forth
from the dust of the earth;
You claimed us for Christ in the waters of baptism.
Look upon us as we enter these forty days
bearing the mark of ashes,
and bless our journey through the desert of lent
to the font of rebirth. May our fasting be hunger for justice;
Our alms, a making of peace;
Our prayer, the chant of humble and grateful hearts.
All we do and pray is in the name of Jesus,
For in his cross you proclaim your love.
For ever and ever.
Amen
NAPLAN Assessments
NAPLAN (National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy) is an annual assessment conducted in Australia to evaluate the literacy and numeracy skills of students in grades 3, 5, 7, and 9. The aim of NAPLAN is to provide a snapshot of student's skills in key areas of learning and to identify areas where students may need additional support.
During the assessment, students are given tests in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar, and punctuation), and numeracy. The tests are standardized and conducted at the same time across the country. The results of the tests are used to identify areas where students are performing well and areas where improvement is needed.
NAPLAN is an important tool for teachers, schools, and policymakers to understand how well students are learning in these key areas and to make informed decisions about how to support students in their learning. The results of the tests can also be used to track student progress over time and to identify areas where additional resources may be needed.
It is natural for parents to be concerned about their child's performance in the test, but it is important to understand that NAPLAN is not the only measure of a student's academic ability or potential. The test is just one tool that teachers at OLA use to identify areas where students may need additional support or intervention.
It is also important to remember that NAPLAN results are not used to determine a student's final grades or progression to the next level of schooling. Rather, they are used to inform teachers, schools, and parents about their child's strengths and weaknesses in specific areas of literacy and numeracy.
We wish our Years 3 and 5 students all the best during their NAPLAN assessments.

Swimming Lessons
Swimming Lessons - Years 1,2 & 3
We have had a great start to our swimming lessons at Terry Tyzack this week, especially after not being able to have lessons through Covid. It has been very pleasing to hear from the swim school that our students are performing and behaving well.
Swimming Carnival - Years 4,5 & 6
We are looking forward to our Senior Swimming Carnival at Bayswater Waves on Monday 20 March. Mr Allsop has distributed information to the relevant year levels and we are looking forward to a great day. As always, our carnivals rely on the support and help of our parents. If you can spare some time to assist us on the pool deck, please contact Mr Allsop.

Harmony Day at OLA
Harmony Day is a day that is celebrated in Australia on March 21st each year to promote cultural diversity, respect and inclusiveness of people from different backgrounds, races, religions and cultures. It is a day that recognizes and celebrates Australia's cultural diversity, and highlights the importance of belonging and acceptance for all Australians, regardless of their cultural or linguistic background.
In order to be inclusive of people from different races, religions and cultures, it is important to recognize and celebrate diversity, and to embrace and respect differences. This can be achieved by:
Educating oneself about different cultures and traditions: Learning about different cultures and traditions can help to break down stereotypes and prejudices, and promote understanding and respect.
Being open-minded: Being open-minded and accepting of people from different backgrounds, races, religions and cultures can help to create a sense of community and belonging, and can help to build stronger relationships.
Celebrating diversity: Celebrating different cultural events, festivals and holidays can help to promote cultural understanding and respect.
Encouraging diversity in the workplace: Encouraging diversity in the workplace can help to create a more inclusive environment and promote greater understanding and collaboration among colleagues.
Challenging discrimination: Challenging discrimination and racism when it occurs can help to create a more inclusive and accepting society for all people.
To celebrate Harmony Day at OLA, students may come to school on the 21 March in a cultural dress OR an orange shirt worn with sport shorts/runners. Students may like to enter a poster competition on the theme of ‘Everyone Belongs’ with prizes of vouchers to spend at the canteen! Flyers were distributed to the students last week.
The students will also be participating in a range of classroom activities, such as identifying the family backgrounds of classmates on a large world map, making a heritage portrait, discussions about diversity, and listening to people share stories of their arrival in Australia.
Let's celebrate cultural diversity and an inclusive Australia!
